What “Grith” Means
Why "grith"?
Because names should set a standard, not just sound good.
In Old English, grith means peace, protection, sanctuary. That is exactly the operating model we think AI tooling needs.
Most AI agents today are powerful but structurally unsafe by default. They can read broadly, execute broadly, and connect broadly, then rely on prompts or ad hoc approvals to stay out of trouble. That is not peace. It is latent risk.
Peace
For developers, peace means you can use AI tools without constantly wondering:
- "What did it just read?"
- "Where did that data go?"
- "Did I just approve something unsafe because I was moving too fast?"
Peace is not silence. It is confidence that risky behavior is being evaluated consistently, in real time, before execution.
Protection
Protection is not a marketing checkbox. It is architecture.
At grith, protection means every security-relevant operation is evaluated at execution time:
- file access,
- process execution,
- network egress.
Instead of a binary "ask every time" model, grith uses multi-filter scoring with three outcomes:
- low-risk operations auto-allow,
- high-risk operations auto-deny,
- uncertain operations queue for review.
That model exists for one reason: protect users without destroying flow.
Sanctuary
Sanctuary does not mean isolation from useful tools. It means a controlled environment where useful tools can run safely.
That is why grith supports both:
- a built-in local agent path, and
- supervisor mode for external CLI agents.
You keep the productivity gains from modern AI tooling, but inside a system designed to enforce boundaries on what actually executes.
The practical meaning of the name
"Grith" is not a metaphor layered on after the product was designed. It is the design target:
- Peace: reduce fear and uncertainty in daily AI-assisted development.
- Protection: enforce policy at the operation layer, not just the prompt layer.
- Sanctuary: enable powerful tools in a controlled environment, not an all-access environment.
If those three outcomes are not true in practice, the name is wrong.
Why this matters now
Agent capabilities are improving quickly. So is the attack surface.
If we keep bolting safety onto architectures that start from ambient authority, we will keep repeating the same failure pattern: broad access first, controls second.
We started grith to invert that pattern.
Security has to be foundational, local, and enforceable at the point of execution. That is what the name commits us to.

- Does the system create peace, or constant doubt?
- Does it provide real protection, or just more prompts?
- Does it create sanctuary, or just widen the blast radius?
